How to Talk to Your Adult Kids About Making a Move

You’ve been thinking about it for a while now. Maybe it’s the yard that feels like too much. Maybe the house just has more space than you need. Maybe you’ve driven past a 55+ community and thought — that looks really nice.

But then comes the conversation you’re not sure how to start.

Your kids.

For a lot of people I work with, telling their adult children they’re thinking about selling the family home is one of the hardest parts of the whole process. Not because their kids will be unsupportive — most of the time they’re not — but because the conversation carries so much weight. That house is where holidays happened. Where kids grew up. Where memories live.

Here’s what I’ve seen work, time and time again.

Start Before You’re Ready to Decide

The biggest mistake people make is waiting until they’ve already made up their mind — and then telling their kids. What feels like sharing news to you can feel like a done deal to them, and they can end up feeling left out of something important.

Start the conversation early. Not “we’ve decided to sell” — but “we’ve been thinking about what the next chapter looks like, and we’d love to talk it through with you.” That small shift changes everything. It invites them in rather than informing them after the fact.

Lead with What You’re Excited About — Not What You’re Leaving

It’s easy for this conversation to center on loss — leaving the family home, leaving the neighborhood, leaving the familiar. And that’s real. But if that’s all your kids hear, they’re going to worry.

Lead with the positive. Tell them what excites you about the next chapter. The community with the pickleball courts. The smaller home that means no more weekend maintenance. The pool that’s steps from your front door. The neighbors who actually knock on each other’s doors.

When your kids hear that you’re genuinely looking forward to something — not just trying to get out of a situation — the whole tone of the conversation shifts.

Acknowledge the Sentimental Side — For Both of You

You don’t have to pretend this is easy. It isn’t. And your kids may grieve the family home even more than you do — sometimes adult children hold onto these places more tightly than the parents who actually live there.

Give that space. Say something like: “I know this house holds a lot for all of us. I feel that too.” You don’t have to fix it or rush past it. Just naming it together can make the whole conversation feel safer.

Be Clear About What Kind of Support You Need

Sometimes adult children want to help and end up taking over. They start researching communities, sending you listings, weighing in on decisions you haven’t made yet — all out of love, but it can feel overwhelming.

It’s okay to be direct: “Right now I just want to talk it through — I’m not ready for advice yet” or “I’d love your help when we get to the point of looking at places.” Telling them how they can support you is a gift to everyone.

Include Them in the Process (When You’re Ready)

Once you do start looking, inviting your kids to tour a community or two with you can be a game changer. Something that sounds abstract — “Mom’s moving to a 55+ community” — becomes real and reassuring when they walk in and see it for themselves.

Most kids who visit these communities with their parents come away surprised. They expected something clinical. What they find is a neighborhood full of people who chose to be there — who are thriving, socializing, and genuinely enjoying life. That’s hard to argue with.

Remember: This Is Your Decision

At the end of the day, this is your home, your life, and your next chapter. Your kids love you and want the best for you — and most of the time, once they understand what you’re moving toward, they’ll be your biggest supporters.

You’ve spent decades making decisions that were good for your family. This one is for you.

Want Help Thinking It Through?

Sometimes it helps to talk to someone outside the family first — someone who has walked alongside a lot of people through exactly this conversation. I’d love to be that sounding board for you.

No pressure. No pitch. Just a real conversation about where you are and what the next step might look like.
